The levers
Five levers that count for law firms.
Your Google Business Profile, reviews and a clean website are the foundation. Clients who aren’t looking for a lawyer yet, you reach with guides that answer their legal question plainly.

Answer the question before the call.
Someone who has just been fired wants to know first whether it was legal, which deadline runs and whether a case is worth it. A guide that explains this calmly makes your firm the first name they see, and AI answers draw on exactly these guides.
EvidenceAI Overview for “wrongful termination” on October 5, 2026: eight of ten sources were law firm guides. Eight of the top nine results came from law firms.
Write for your state.
Deadlines and procedures differ from state to state, and clients search that way. A guide for your state, with an “as of” date, is more useful than a national overview, and it’s where your firm can actually take the case.
EvidenceFor “what to do after a car accident” (4,400 searches a month), seven of the top eight results on October 5, 2026 were law firm guides, six of them with a state or city in the title.
Explain costs and fees openly.
Fear of the bill keeps many people from calling. Guides on what a divorce, a will or a contingency fee costs take that hurdle away. Give typical ranges and what drives them, say that every case is different, and don’t compare your fees with other firms’ unless you can back it up.
Evidence“how much does a divorce cost” 8,100, “how much does a lawyer cost” 4,400, “how much does a will cost” 3,600, “contingency fee” 2,900 searches a month. For “lawyer near me”, Google’s first “People also ask” question on October 5, 2026 was “What is the average price to hire a lawyer?”.
Pick questions where a lawyer adds something.
For pure procedure, like which form starts a divorce, courts and legal aid sites own the answer, and rightly so. Your guide adds what they can’t: what an uncontested divorce really costs, the mistakes that make it contested, and when it’s time to call a lawyer.
EvidenceAI Overview for “how to file for divorce” on October 5, 2026: ten of fifteen sources were courts, legal aid sites and a nonprofit. The top nine results were all courts, legal aid or state sites.
For “near me”, your profile wins.
Someone searching “divorce lawyer near me” sees the map with Google Business Profiles and reviews first, then directories. A blog post doesn’t win that search. Keep your profile complete with practice areas, hours and reviews. That’s the foundation; Claire doesn’t do it for you.
Evidence“lawyer near me”: 40,500 searches a month. On October 5, 2026, Google showed the map with three firms first, then the directories Justia, Super Lawyers and Best Lawyers in places 1 to 3.
Pitfalls and the law
What attorneys need to watch in their content.
A guide on your firm’s website is a communication about your services, so your state’s advertising rules apply. Most states base theirs on the ABA Model Rules cited here. This isn’t legal advice; if in doubt, check with your state bar.
Results and promises
Under ABA Model Rule 7.1, nothing you say about your services may be false or misleading. Its comment goes further: even a true report of past results can mislead if readers expect the same outcome without regard to the facts of their own case, and so can an unsupported comparison with other firms. A guide explains the law; it doesn’t promise outcomes.

Rule 7.2(c): you may not state or imply that a lawyer is certified as a specialist unless an organization approved by the state or accredited by the ABA has certified them, and the communication names that organization. That includes bylines and author bios under your guides. Rule 7.2(d) also asks for the name and contact information of at least one lawyer or firm responsible for the content.
Source: ABA Model Rule 7.2Client stories
Lawyers who blog may not reveal information relating to a representation, even if it’s in a public record, without the client’s informed consent. Calling it a “hypothetical” doesn’t help if readers could still identify the client. So change the facts of any example until nobody is recognizable, and answer questions in the comments only in general terms, so you don’t form a client relationship by accident.

Statutes of limitations differ by state, and they change. In March 2023, Florida cut the deadline for negligence claims from four years to two. A car accident guide that still says four years misleads exactly the readers who rely on it. Date every guide and review it when the law moves; Claire suggests an update when an article loses positions.

Questions
Good to know.
What is SEO for lawyers?
Everything that helps a law firm get found when people search for legal help: a complete Google Business Profile and reviews for local searches, a fast website with clear practice-area pages, and guides that answer what clients ask before they call. The first two are the foundation, handled by you or your web agency. The third is where most firms fall behind, and where Claire comes in.
Is SEO worth it for a law firm?
Yes, if you cover the questions that come before the call. Ad clicks in legal are expensive: on “personal injury lawyer”, $170.62 on average in the US. Questions like “wrongful termination” get answered by Google’s AI Overview, and on October 5, 2026, eight of its ten sources were law firm guides.
How much does law firm SEO cost?
With Claire, €199 a month on Starter and €299 with the full SEO strategy and AI tracking, cancellable monthly. Your Google Business Profile, technical work on your website and ads aren’t included. For comparison: one ad click on “divorce lawyer near me” costs $24.33 on average in the US.
Can lawyers advertise with blog posts?
Yes. Under ABA Model Rule 7.2, lawyers may communicate information about their services through any media, as long as nothing is false or misleading (Rule 7.1). A guide on your website isn’t solicitation, because it’s directed to the general public (Rule 7.3, Comment [1]). It still counts as advertising: in California, for example, the State Bar’s ethics committee found in 2016 that a blog on a firm’s website falls under the advertising rules just like the website itself. Check your state’s version of the rules.
Can I do SEO for my law firm myself?
The basics, yes: keep your Google Business Profile complete, give each practice area a clear page, make sure your site is fast. Where most firms run out of time is a steady flow of guides, and keeping them current when the law changes. Claire takes over the plan and the drafts; you check the law and approve.
How long does law firm SEO take?
Plan for months. For broad questions you compete with courts, legal aid sites, banks and directories that have published for years. Narrow questions from your own practice area, written for your state, move faster because there are fewer good answers.
How do I get my firm recommended by ChatGPT?
With answers to the questions clients ask before they look for a lawyer, and with mentions outside your website, for example in trade media, which you can request directly in Claire. The free AI check shows how often ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity name your firm today. In Claire you then track it continuously in ChatGPT and Google AI.
